Pastor Talk is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, IA.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Pastor Talk Bible study.
We’re grateful that you’re with us.
Little bit of a change today.
We are actually taking this day,
Thursday off.
We finished the book of Genesis.
We’ve been at that for months,
really, as we’ve worked through the first opening
words of the Bible,
the first book of the Bible.
Now we’re taking a very drastic change of direction
as we move to the New Testament.
On Monday, we will begin a new study on 1 Timothy,
possibly going into 2 Timothy.
We’ll see what the timing of that looks like.
But a very different kind of book, Michael,
than the Old Testament,
very different than Genesis.
Yeah.
So if you’ve been with us through the whole book of Genesis,
then you’ve gotten accustomed to
the narrative style of very much telling the story of these individuals and God’s work
to fulfill that covenantal promise.
As we turn our attention now to Timothy,
it is far more instructive.
It is far more devotional.
It is far more really encouraging
in the nature and tone of the letter.
And to be fair,
it’s a completely different genre,
right? We’re not talking about sort of the Genesis of all of the family of faith.
Rather, now we’re talking about an older Christian writing council to a younger.
There’s some church leadership,
as you said.
There’s some working towards maturity and fullness of faith.
So the very genre of the
letter itself is going to be a substantial change.
But I would say if you’re a personality
that appreciates sort of more direct,
more rubber meets the road kind of faith conversation,
then this is a great time to get on the road with us because Timothy has all of that in spades.
Yeah. If you’ve been with us through Genesis,
we appreciate that.
But if you found yourself at any point thinking,
boy, this is good, this is interesting, but I just don’t know if I see the
practical application of it,
you’re going to like Timothy.
You may not like all of it because there
are some parts that we’ll have to talk about.
There are some very challenging pieces.
There are
whole,
especially as opposed to a book like Genesis,
you’re going to find Timothy rich with
instruction.
Not only a word to Timothy,
but words that easily translate and challenge us in our own walk of faith.
And I hope if that’s what you’ve been looking for,
I hope that you will find this
to be more along those lines.
And I think that you will find this book extremely helpful in
that regard.
And I think some of Paul’s most interesting writing in that
he,
in much of Paul’s
writing, as we went through Romans,
he has a sort of very universal take.
This is very specific.
He’s writing to an individual.
He’s weighing in on very specific issues that have come up.
He’s telling Timothy what he thinks Timothy ought to do or to watch out for in some circumstances.
And I think that specificity translates really well to some of our own struggles,
some of our own issues.
I find these books really compelling and I hope that if you all are able to join us,
you will as well.
Well, I think that’s a pretty good summary of where we’re going to go,
where we anticipate going.
I do think just a word of invitation here.

However, it’s convenient for you.
