In this third class on the parables, we explore Luke 15’s stories of the lost sheep and the lost coin. Beginning with experiences of welcome and exclusion, the discussion considers why Jesus’ fellowship with tax collectors and sinners unsettled the religious leaders. The class asks what changes when we hear the story from the perspective of the ninety-nine, and whether we can celebrate the person God seeks even when welcoming them is difficult. Questions about repentance, hospitality, and community lead to the shared emphasis of both parables: rejoicing. The lesson closes with an invitation to notice God’s work in small places and let that work renew our joy.
