Pastor Talk is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, IA.
Hey, friends, I wanted to let you know about an upcoming podcast that we are working on.
It’s a series that we’re calling Unhindered.
It’s a look at our spiritual health,
our spiritual growth,
some of the ways and places that we
tend to get stuck,
and some thoughts on how we might work past some of those areas and
move forward as we seek to
explore and increase in our discipleship.
Yeah, we want to invite you to commit to tune in.
We’re going to be going for about seven weeks here and having conversations about ways that
we can really assess,
diagnose,
how are we doing in our spiritual health and what things
could we work to leave behind that might free us to really reach forward.
I think, you know, Clint, one of the conversations we’ve had leading up to this is how easy
it can be sometimes to get overwhelmed by our spiritual lives,
to feel like there’s
a lot of “shoulds” and maybe even “musts” that we feel like we don’t rise up to and
that we don’t maybe fit exactly what we think we should be doing.
When we find ourselves in those places,
when we fail to be reflective,
we sometimes lose an opportunity to get unstuck and to actually take real and meaningful steps forward into
a relationship with God and to a vibrant kind of experience of the faith.
Even I would say to take the faith out of it and just say a vibrant life,
an experience of what God wants for us.
So this is going to be an opportunity,
a non-judgmental look
to look at our faith and to ask some
real meaningful questions about where can we let go of some things, let’s identify them,
and let’s talk about some tools that we have to do that.
And we hope that you might commit to be part of that as we enter into this next new season.
Right, and the idea is not to produce guilt.
All of us have places where we could be and maybe even should be doing more or better.
All of us tend to know the places where we struggle and some of the places where we get bogged down.
And so this is just an honest conversation about some of those.
In fact, we’re going to incorporate a weekly tool to help us kind of
be honest about those
that will just be for self-reflection.
It’s not something that’s going to be shared outside of the podcast,
but it will give us
an opportunity to look into those places where we might have some work to do and then some
thoughts on what that work will look like.
And the idea is not to be burdened,
to be guilty,
to be met with more stuff.
The idea is really unhindered,
to be set free,
to move forward in areas maybe we’ve struggled
to move forward in in the past.
And we hope it’ll be helpful.
Yeah, I think maybe, Clint, that’s the note to leave here that I have is really what we’re
asking is for you to commit to be with us on the journey.
It’s going to be one of those things that no single step will be determinative.
There won’t be a single conversation that is going to build the building.
It would be step by step saying, “You know what?
For this next series,
I’m going to be willing to fill out the survey every week,
a short little selection of questions,
and in doing so,
I’m going to commit to spend a little
bit of time being honest with myself about my own current spiritual engagement.”
And there’s going to be some weeks where you walk out of that feeling really encouraged,
like what you have been doing and how you feel connected to your faith is deep and meaningful.
There’s going to be some other conversations where we’ll all be challenged.
And the point of that isn’t so much to just experience being challenged,
but rather to see the whole picture,
to recognize that faith is much bigger than one moment or one day.
It’s certainly more than just a feeling.
And so as we assess that larger picture,
then that will give you the tool in the year to
come that you can really then begin to engage,
you know, maybe I do want to work on my generosity
or maybe I need to work on forgiveness or whatever that area is,
it gives you a sense
for where to start.
And for all of us who’ve experienced being overwhelmed in conversations like these,
the willingness to go week by week,
small step by small step,
I think will help bring all
of us to a place where without feeling overwhelmed and buried in all of the possibilities,
we might have some clarity and direction on what we can do this year.
Not a long period of time to invest really seven weeks,
hope that you’ll be part of it
and that it’ll be deep and meaningful for you.
Yeah, and we hope the ultimate end will be growth and growth is always a product of reflection,
of effort and change.
And so as we try to incorporate those elements into our spiritual growth,
we hope this will
be an opportunity to move that direction.
All right, that’s enough of us talking about a thing that we’re going to do.
We hope that this is interesting to you and would love for you to give us feedback or
questions or thoughts you might have in advance wherever you’re listening or watching this.
And all that said,
we look forward to kicking it off with you and seeing you at our next conversation next Thursday.
Until then, be blessed.
Take care.
